Ο τύπος του σχολείου Πρωτοβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης που κυριάρχησε στην Τουρκοκρατούμενη Μακεδονία, στις αρχές του 20^ου αιώνα, ήταν η Αστική σχολή τύπου Α΄. Διακρινόταν σε «αρρένων» και «θηλέων» και λειτουργούσε με πέντε δασκάλους/ες. Στο ορεινό Κάστρο της Θάσου, όπου οι οικονομικοί πόροι της κοινότητας ήταν πενιχροί,  λειτούργησε μικτή Αστική σχολή τύπου Β΄ με δύο δασκάλους και μία δασκάλα. Παράλληλα, λειτουργούσε και Νηπιαγωγείο με δύο τάξεις (νηπιακή και προκαταρκτική).

Το σχολείο του Κάστρου στεγάστηκε Στην νοτιοανατολική πλευρά του περιβόλου της εκκλησίας του αγίου Αθανασίου, σε ένα διώροφο κτίσμα, γύρω στα 1870, το Δημοτικό Σχολείο. Το ισόγειο λειτουργούσε ως κεντρικό καφενείο της πλατείας του χωριού. Ο όροφος που στέγαζε το σχολείο είχε συνολικό εμβαδόν 80 τ.μ. Μια πέτρινη σκάλα που βρισκόταν στη βόρεια πλευρά του κτιρίου, οδηγούσε στην είσοδο του σχολείου.   Η Κεντρική εκκλησία του αγίου Αθανασίου είναι από τις αρχαιότερες της Θάσου που σώζεται μέχρι σήμερα και η τρίτη μεγαλύτερη του νησιού. Είναι τρίκλιτη, ξυλόστεγη, διαστάσεων 18,63μ Χ 12,08μ. ∆εξιά της εισόδου του ναού, στον νότιο τοίχο, βρίσκεται η επιγραφή κτίσης του, χαραγμένη σε μαρμάρινη πλάκα: «1804 ΙΟΥΝΑΡΙ». Είναι τρίκλιτη ξυλόστεγη Βασιλική με στοά. Ο κύριος χώρος του ναού έχει εσωτερικές διαστάσεις 10,60Χ 17,15μ. και ύψος 4,50μ., στην περιοχή όμως του γυναικωνίτη το ύψος είναι σχετικά χαμηλό, 2,20μ. Είναι κτισμένη με πλακοειδείς πέτρες και ξυλοδεσιές που εξωτερικά δεν φαίνονται.

The type of Primary School that dominated in Turkish-occupied Macedonia in the early 20^th century, was the Urban School of Type A. It was separated into a male and a female school and operated with five teachers. In the mountainous Kastro, where the community’s financial resources were meagre, a mixed urban school of type B operated with two male and one female teacher. There was also a kindergarten with two classes (kindergarten and preschool).

The Primary School of Kastro was housed in a two-storey building on the south-eastern side of the courtyard of the church of Agios Athanasios around 1870. The ground floor functioned as the central “Kafenio” (cafe) of the village square. The floor that housed the school had a total area of 80 sq.m. A stone staircase that was located on the north side of the building, led to the entrance of the school. The central church of Agios Athanasios is one of the oldest on Thassos and the third largest on the island. It has a three-aisled, wooden roof, measuring 18.63m x 12.08m. On the right side of the entrance of the church, on the south wall, is the inscription of its creation, engraved on a marble plate: “1804 June”. It is a three-aisled wooden roof basilica with an arcade. The main area of the church has internal dimensions 10,60x 17,15m. and a height of 4,50m., but in the area of the women’s balcony the height is relatively low at 2,20m. It was built with slab stones and wooden bindings that are not visible from the outside.
